Abstract: The presently employed strategies of conservation are largely exclusionary and any increase in such areas may severely impede the development process and may cause socio-cultural and economic conflicts. This paper deals with a new alternative approach of a departure from the strict go and no go zones mode into regulated inclusionary method of ecologically sensitive zones. The present paper discusses the evolution of the present method with the case study of Western Ghats region. We discuss the various challenges that need to be overcome for a sustainable conservation and development regime to be successful in present and future.
