Diversity of ornamental fishes in Narmada River

Abstract:

The diversity of ornamental fish in river Narmada and its tributaries in central India has been studied. A total of 42 species of fishes were recorded from selected sites of Narmada River at Hoshangabad (Narmadapuram) belonging to 5 orders and 13 families. The order Cypriniformes is the most diverse group with 24 species followed by Perciformes with 7 families and 12 species, Siluriformes with 3 families and 4 species, while order Osteoglossiformes and Synbranchiformes are each represented by a single family and species. The value of Shannon-Weaver index varied from 1.987- 3.265, Evevnness index varied from 0.67-0.90 & Margalef’s richness diversity index ranged between 2.14 and 5.441 during the study.
