Abstract:

The present study provides an assessment of fish diversity in the Ngengpui River, highlighting the conservation status of various species as per the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. A total of 23 fish species across different genera were documented. The IUCN status of these species varied from Least Concern (LC) to Near Threatened (NT), Data Deficient (DD), and Not Evaluated (NE). Ngengpui River supports high fish biodiversity, with 23 species recorded. The low Simpson Index (D = 0.059) and high Reciprocal Index (1/D = 16.949) confirm that no single species dominates, ensuring a well-balanced ecosystem. The Shannon-Wiener Index (H = 2.981) and Evenness (E = 0.951) indicate that species are evenly distributed, contributing to a stable and healthy fish community. Overall, the river provides a suitable habitat for diverse fish species, reflecting good ecological conditions. The findings contribute to the understanding of regional aquatic biodiversity and underline the necessity for conservation initiatives.
