Abstract:

Biofloc Technology (BFT) has emerged in Bangladesh to meet rising fish demand and reduce the environmental impact of traditional aquaculture. However, limited studies have created knowledge gaps regarding the quality of fish raised through biofloc systems. This study aimed to provide insights into the nutritional and biochemical characteristics of fish cultivated using BFT. Three commercially important species, such as Koi (Anabas testudineus), Shing (Heteropneustes fossilis), and Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were collected from BFT systems, as well as from traditional culture and capture systems. Nutritional profiles, including moisture, protein, lipid, and ash, were analyzed in fresh condition. Additionally, biochemical parameters such as pH, TVB-N, and TBARS were assessed under frozen (-18 ± 2°C) storage conditions. Results showed significantly higher protein, lipid, and ash content in BFT fish, irrespective of species. During 60 days of storage, a gradual decline in nutritional quality was observed, while BFT fish showed lower TVB-N and TBARS values. These findings highlight the potential of BFT systems in producing nutritionally superior fish and promoting sustainable aquaculture.
