Hair analysis is a versatile, non-invasive method employed in ecological studies, veterinary science, to monitor the environment and also in forensics. In this review, we consolidate approaches for hair sampling and processing, microscopic and molecular species identification, chemical and isotopic characterization, as well as comparative results obtained for wild versus domestic animals. We outline key applications (diet reconstruction, contaminant exposure, and population monitoring and forensic identification), methodological constraints and research priorities.
