Author(s):

B.B. Ngueku

Abstract:
The River Awe was investigated for its diverse fish fauna with the aid of conventional fishing gears. 10 Orders, 21 Families, 24 Genera and 37 Species were found. Conventional and unconventional cultivable species found were: Tilapia sp.,Heterobranchus spp., Clarias gariepinusLabeo coubieParchanna obscura, Bagrus sp., Heterotis niloticusLates niloticus Gymnarchus niloticus and Citharinus Citharus. The study concludes that indigenous fish species discovered can be better exploited for their cultivable potentials if they are prioritized in response to the country’s aquaculture potentials to enhance fish food protein sufficiency and empower the citizenry.
